The French Revolution By:Nicole Feltham
French society before the revolution
Before the revolution France was run by the King Louis XVI and the church. His wife, Marie Antoinette was not liked by the peasants, because she would waste their money. There was a revolution in America, where the people got more power and had no King so that's what a lot of french people wanted.
France was poor from war and supporting the American revolution. The price of bread was high, and ordinary people were starving. The church owned most of the land in France and they put a tax on crops that the poor people could not afford. People did not want to be ruled by a King, They also want freedom of religion.

There were three estates of government and the peasants had the least power in the third estate. They formed National Assembly because they were not happy with the other two estates. They were taxed the most and didn't have much say in decisions.

The peasants took over Paris, broke into Bastille (Prison), killed the head of the prison, and stole a bunch of their weapons. In August 1789 they ended feudalism and the taxes the church was making the poor people pay. They wrote the Declaration of the Rights of man and of the citizen which sets out basic human rights.
- Guaranteed freedom of thought, speech, religion, security and property.
- Put limits on the power of Government.

The Reign of Terror
The revolutionary government of France made reforms but also they used terror and violence to keep their power. For the average person the revolution did not help their life, lots of them were killed during them trying to turn it all around. Some governments that don't have the support of most of the people, still use fear to control their citizens.
